A Hot Tub with a View

Brinnon is a small town ( population 907 ) on the Northwest shores of Hood Canal, wrapping around the edge of the Olympic National Park. It’s pretty far off the beaten path for traditional amenities, but it’s rich in natural wonders: Pleasant Harbor and Dosewallips State Park, the latter a 425-acre park along both freshwater and saltwater shores. Some trailheads up into the mountains are just 10 or 15 minutes away.

This cabin-like abode, complete with adjacent guest home, takes full advantage of its setting, with a Hood Canal view from a perch on top of a hill. A log-cabin exterior lets it blend into its natural surroundings, and its offbeat, wood-plank interior has the comforts of home while still maintaining the aesthetic.

An open-concept floor plan makes room for a large kitchen with a combination of new stainless steel appliances and repurposed materials. At the center, a kitchen island made from a chest of drawers with a formidable wood slab on top and extra storage in medicine cabinets on either side. Acacia countertops line two walls, providing an abundance of work space.

The living and dining area have their own unique touches. A small wood stove is brand-new and has built-in firewood storage underneath. A tray ceiling, lined with smaller wood boards, adds some visual interest and height to the room. On the east wall, a set of bifold glass doors accordion open to the large, covered porch, allowing you to decide just how much indoor-outdoor connection you want today.

A lot of work has been done since the last time it sold, including swapping vinyl floors for bamboo and adding both new appliances and major personality to the kitchen. Some changes are more dramatic—the entire tray ceiling, for example, came along sometime in the last few years. Other changes are more subtle, like new carpet in the two bedrooms (and office!) and a new cabinet in the bathroom.

Connected by a small bridge between porches, a small guesthouse or studio tucked into the trees is, effectively, a library. Shelves, built-in and otherwise, line the walls, including a few hung between classical columns. Wood-plank walls and a vaulted ceiling complete the woodland-hideout look.

The sunny yard has plenty of space to work, relax, and play. Both structures have their own large view porches, but the one off the main house is more room-like; it’s thoroughly covered, with an open, airy connection to the living room. A hot tub provides an extra-luxurious lounging space, and has its own water view. Below, a large raised-bed garden has a new deer fence, necessary for the parade of wildlife that comes through.

While the property isn’t directly on the waterfront, it shares a private community beach with tidelands and plenty of opportunity for clam and oyster harvesting—and even some salmon fishing.
