I’m of the opinion that there’s no room that can’t be improved by the simple addition of a house plant. Not only does flora add to the room’s overall aesthetic, bringing colour, life and visual drama, but plants can help with our stress levels, instilling calm and tranquillity.

F or many, it’s that first encounter with a lush garden or beautiful outdoor scene that sparks an interest in the magic of nature and allows us to release control of our everyday lives. Studies have also shown that caring for plants can lift one’s mood and improve concentration levels.

Over the course of the pandemic, our homes played a pivotal role in how we managed our days, both physically and mentally, with lockdowns turning our homes into veritable flora feeding grounds; if we couldn’t get outside then we’d bring it indoors.

A quick search for #houseplants on Instagram will bring you down a rabbit hole of 8.4 million posts , somewhat disconcerting if you’re anything like me and manage to kill almost every single one. But let’s be honest, most of us aren’t plant experts; we just like how they look and hope their spot on the windowsill will keep them happy.

But if you are looking to flex your green thumbs, it might be time to consider the type of environment your plant needs to flourish, and invest in some accessories to help you perfect your routine.

This time of year always brings the green-fingered enthusiast out in us as we look to weed out the old and make space for the new, so whether you’re looking to become a proper plant whisperer or just want to brighten up a corner, here are some accessories to help . Failing that, there’s plenty of good faux alternatives on the market that will make your space look lush without the guilt that you’ve, yet again, killed another plant.

Oliver Bonas has always been out front with colour and paid attention to our gardens, both indoor and out, stocking a huge array of bright, ceramic plant pots in various shades, shapes and patterns, as well as stylish rattan plant dividers and stands. To liven up a wall space, consider dedicating a shelf unit to just plants with Littlewoods’ circular rattan plant shelf.

Depending on your space, a well-placed and chosen planter can make a difference to the whole room in terms of aesthetics and design. Ferm Living’s hourglass metal planters are the grand gesture when it comes to houseplants, elevating them to another level. The lightweight pots come in three sizes and can be flipped upside down depending on the size of your plant. Ferm Living’s brand ethos has always been about authentic Scandinavian design that combines form, function and style, and the garden is no exception, with simple, practical and stylish box planters, hanging ceramic pots, and beautiful watering cans that could happily sit with other décor items as a display.

For well-priced gardening accessories, it’s worth a browse in TK Maxx and Homesense, both of which stock faux plants, stands, pots and gardening tools. Butlers Homeware is another trove of reasonably priced homewares, and does a good range of garden pots and accessories.

If you’ve resorted to a fake alternative, fear not, they’ve come a long way from the wooden tulips that graced your grandmother’s sideboard. Nowadays, there’s artificial trees, plants, flowers and succulents, with authenticity that will have you doubting your eyesight (Woodies, M&S, Homesense, Primark, Dunnes).
